Malaga, tech city: the startup ecosystem guide

· La Rédaction de TDV
Cybersecurity, Málaga TechPark, Google accelerator and office costs: the guide to Malaga's startup ecosystem.

Malaga is one of Spain's fastest-growing startup ecosystems, up 40% in 2025 according to StartupBlink, and its strongest specialty is cybersecurity. It is still a small ecosystem, though, and there is no single official figure for how many startups it has. This guide gives you the numbers that do exist, explains why they can't be added together, and is clear about what Malaga doesn't offer yet. If you are comparing cities, start with our comparison of Spain's startup cities.

Some context first. According to the Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2026, Madrid and Barcelona together captured 2.3 billion euros of the 3.1 billion euros invested in Spanish startups in 2025. Valencia comes third, with 229 million euros and 1,689 startups. Malaga is not in that league on volume. Its case rests on growth, specialization and cost.

Why isn't there one figure for "Malaga's startups"?

Because three different sources measure three different things, and none of them counts "startups in Malaga" as a whole. The scopes are separate, so adding them up would give you a meaningless number. Here they are side by side.

Scope What is counted Key figures Source
Málaga TechPark (PTA) All organizations hosted in the tech park, of every size, not only startups 719 organizations; 29,018 employees at the end of 2025; combined revenue of 4,896 million euros (+17.11%); total investment in 2025 of 56.5 million euros (+52.7% vs 2024), of which 54.5 million euros was private pta.es, official statements, 2025-2026
City of Malaga (outside the park) Tech companies and startups in the city 196 tech companies, including 116 startups; 6th innovation hub in Spain by number of tech companies elreferente.es, 2025
Province of Malaga Active companies in the provincial ecosystem 197 active companies; combined revenue of 280.5 million euros; nearly 350 new companies created in 2025 malagahub.substack.com, 2025

Some practical points for reading the table:

  • The 719 PTA organizations are not 719 startups. That number includes large companies, research centres and SMEs. The PTA does not publish a separate startup count.
  • The 116 startups figure from elreferente.es covers the city and not the park. By that measure, elreferente.es (2025) ranks Malaga 6th in Spain, behind Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao and San Sebastián.
  • The provincial figures from malagahub.substack.com (2025) use their own method. They are not an extension of the other two.

If someone gives you a single "number of startups in Malaga", ask which scope they mean.

Which sectors dominate in Malaga?

Cybersecurity comes first, followed by AI, software and microelectronics, based on information from the PTA and APTE (the association of Spanish science and technology parks) for 2025.

  • Cybersecurity, the historic axis. VirusTotal was founded in Malaga and bought by Google in 2012. That legacy led Google to set up its Google Safety Engineering Center in Malaga, and it is the main reason the city is linked with cybersecurity.
  • AI and software. PTA (2025) lists these as strong sectors among the park's companies.
  • Semiconductors and microelectronics. One example is Innova IRV Microelectronics, which APTE ranked among Spain's top 100 startups of 2025. Two other Malaga companies made the same list: Cloud y Olé and Ubora Solar.

StartupBlink's 2026 ranking, as summarized by hellosafe.es and todostartups.com, describes Malaga as attractive for "international teams" and having "a growing technology base". That matches the profile above: a specialized ecosystem that is still growing, and not yet a generalist hub.

What accelerator is in Malaga?

The flagship program is the Google for Startups Accelerator, which focuses on cybersecurity. According to genbeta.com:

  • the first cohort in Malaga had 8 startups, 6 of them Spanish;
  • the program lasts 6 months;
  • it aims to take 8 to 12 startups a year;
  • Google chose Malaga because of the VirusTotal legacy.

Málaga TechPark is the other main place to land. It hosts 719 organizations (PTA, 2025-2026), so in practice it works as the city's reference park and incubator. If you need office space with a tech community around you, start there.

Be realistic about the scale, though. A cybersecurity accelerator taking 8 to 12 startups a year is a narrow door. If your startup isn't in that field, you may find more programs to choose from in Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia.

How much does office space cost in Malaga?

brainsre.news (2025) puts Malaga in the same band as Valencia and Bilbao, at 14 to 22 euros per square metre per month. That source gives no separate figure for Malaga alone, and we haven't found a reliable one elsewhere, so we won't make one up. Treat the range as a guide and ask local agents or the PTA for current quotes on specific premises.

Why doesn't Malaga (yet) have a flagship tech event?

We couldn't find one. Madrid has South Summit and Barcelona has 4YFN, but we found no tech event in Malaga of comparable size that is open to the general public. The events we did find are internal ceremonies, such as the PTA and APTE awards, which are not big ecosystem gatherings.

This matters if you count on large events to meet investors and clients. In Malaga you will mostly build your network through the tech park, the accelerator and your own sector. Many Malaga founders still travel to Madrid or Barcelona for the big events. If a major event launches in Malaga, we will update this guide.

What doesn't change from city to city?

Your legal and administrative setup is the same in Malaga as anywhere else in Spain. It follows national rules, which we cover in detail elsewhere:

  • the Startup Act (Ley 28/2022) and the ENISA certification;
  • choosing between an SL (limited company) and autónomo (self-employed) status;
  • the entrepreneur visa and the digital nomad visa.

For all of that, read our step-by-step guide to starting a startup in Spain as a foreigner. It is written from Valencia, but the procedures are national. To see how Malaga compares with the two biggest hubs, read our Madrid startup ecosystem guide and our Barcelona startup ecosystem guide.

Is Malaga for you?

Malaga makes sense if:

  • you work in cybersecurity, or in a nearby field like AI, software or microelectronics;
  • you are building an international team (StartupBlink 2026 highlights this);
  • you want a tech park setting, with the 719 organizations at Málaga TechPark;
  • you want office costs in the Valencia and Bilbao range, not Madrid or Barcelona prices.

Look elsewhere first if:

  • you plan to raise large rounds soon: according to the Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2026, 2.3 of the 3.1 billion euros invested in 2025 went to Madrid and Barcelona;
  • you rely on big events to meet investors, since Malaga has no South Summit or 4YFN equivalent;
  • you want a wide choice of generalist accelerators.
