Barcelona, tech city: the startup ecosystem guide
Barcelona is Southern Europe's leading startup ecosystem for the second year running, according to StartupBlink (2025), and ranks 32nd worldwide in its 2026 global ranking. According to the "Barcelona & Catalonia Startup Hub 2025" report by Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (Generalitat de Catalunya), published in 2026, startups raised 1.131 billion euros in 2025. One caveat: the report covers "Barcelona & Catalonia" and doesn't make clear whether that figure is for the city alone or the whole region. This guide follows the same format as our Madrid tech city startup guide. To see how the two cities compare with Valencia and others, read our comparison of Spain's startup cities.
What are Barcelona's startup ecosystem numbers?
Barcelona's ecosystem posted its third best funding year on record in 2025, behind only 2021 and 2022, according to Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ. Check the "Scope" column before you quote a figure: some numbers cover the city, some cover all of Catalonia, and some have an unclear scope.
| Indicator | Figure | Scope | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funding raised in 2025 | 1.131 billion euros, 203 deals | Unclear: the report doesn't say whether this is Barcelona only or all of Catalonia | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ, "Barcelona & Catalonia Startup Hub 2025" (published 2026) |
| Average ticket in 2025 | 5.6 million euros (record) | Unclear (same report) | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (2026) |
| Record years | 2021: 1.687 billion euros; 2022: 1.592 billion euros | Unclear (same report) | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (2026) |
| Active startups | 2,403 (record, +5.2% vs 2024) | Catalonia (regional, not the city) | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (2026) |
| Jobs | 30,500 | Catalonia (regional, not the city) | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (2026) |
| Revenue generated | 2.947 billion euros | Catalonia (regional, not the city) | Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ (2026) |
| Funding raised in H1 2025 | 690 million euros (Madrid: 806 million) | Barcelona, Dealroom methodology | Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2026 (Dealroom and partners), via Startup Valencia (21 May 2026) |
| Madrid + Barcelona share of Spanish investment, 2025 | 2.3 billion of 3.1 billion euros | Both cities combined, Dealroom methodology | Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2026 (Dealroom and partners) |
| Global ranking | 32nd worldwide, ecosystem up 5.5%, the only EU top-5 city still growing | City | Tech Barcelona, via StartupBlink (2026) |
| Southern Europe ranking | 1st, second year in a row | City | StartupBlink (2025) |
What should you keep in mind when reading these numbers?
- The 1.131 billion euro figure is not clearly a city figure. The report is titled "Barcelona & Catalonia" and doesn't say for certain whether the funding total covers the city alone or the whole region. We're not making that call for you: quote it as "Barcelona and Catalonia".
- Startups, jobs and revenue are regional figures. The 2,403 startups, 30,500 jobs and 2.947 billion euros of revenue cover all of Catalonia, not just Barcelona.
- The two funding sources use different methods. The 690 million euros for H1 2025 comes from Dealroom (Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2026), while the 1.131 billion euros for the full year comes from Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ. Don't subtract one from the other to estimate H2 2025: the scope and counting method aren't the same.
- Use Dealroom to compare with Madrid. The 690 million vs 806 million euro comparison for H1 2025 is the only one in this guide where both cities are measured with the same method. Barcelona and Madrid together took 2.3 of the 3.1 billion euros invested in Spanish startups in 2025, according to the same report.

Which sectors dominate in Barcelona?
Healthtech is the top sector, accounting for 30.8% of Catalan startups, according to the Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ 2025 report. These figures cover all of Catalonia, not just the city.
- Healthtech: 30.8% of Catalan startups, the leading sector.
- Travel tech and finance: together with healthtech, they make up the leading trio, which accounts for 37.3% of the ecosystem's cumulative revenue.
- Industry 4.0, AI, big data and cloud: 57.5% of active startups use these technologies.
Keep in mind that these percentages don't measure the same thing. 30.8% is a share of startups, 37.3% is a share of revenue, and 57.5% measures which technologies startups use, whatever their sector. Don't add or compare them.
What's the reference network in Barcelona?
Tech Barcelona is the reference network for Barcelona's tech ecosystem. It's a private non-profit association, founded in 2013 and known as Barcelona Tech City until it changed its name in 2021. It's based at Pier01, in the Palau de Mar building on the port, and runs its own incubation program. It also co-authors the ecosystem's annual report with ACCIÓ, the Generalitat de Catalunya's business competitiveness agency.
This guide only lists networks we could confirm through a direct source. We didn't find verified, sourced information on Barcelona's other accelerators, or on which neighborhoods have the most tech companies, so we're not listing them here.
How much does office space cost in Barcelona?
Office space in Barcelona cost an average of 19.6 euros per square meter per month in 2025, and up to about 30 euros in prime areas, according to brainsre.news and ejeprime.com (data from Mvgm). That average is slightly higher than Madrid's, although Madrid's prime areas are more expensive.
| Zone | Average rent (euros/sqm/month) | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Barcelona, city average | 19.6 | 2025 |
| Barcelona, prime areas | Up to about 30 | 2025 |
| Madrid, city average (for comparison) | 18.34 | 2025 |
These are traditional office rents. We didn't find a reliable, dated source for Barcelona coworking or housing costs, so we're not giving a figure for either.
The event you can't miss (4YFN)
4YFN ("4 Years From Now") is the startup section of Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona. The 2026 edition ran from 2 to 5 March, with more than 1,000 startups and exhibitors, more than 300 speakers and more than 260 pitches, according to mwcbarcelona.com and barcelonactiva.cat. We haven't found official dates for the 2027 edition in these sources yet, so check mwcbarcelona.com before you book anything.
What doesn't change from city to city?
The legal framework is national, so it's the same in Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia. These topics are covered in our other guides:
- The Startup Act (Ley 28/2022) and its tax benefits.
- ENISA certification, which gives you startup status under that law.
- Choosing between an SL (limited company) and autónomo (self-employed) status.
- Visas for foreign founders and employees.
For all of this, read our guide to starting a startup in Spain as a foreigner. For funding, see who funds startups in Spain.
It depends on your project
- You work in healthtech: it's the top sector in Catalonia (30.8% of startups, Tech Barcelona and ACCIÓ), so you'll find plenty of peers and specialized investors in the region.
- You work in travel tech or fintech: these two sectors form the leading trio with healthtech, so you'll be in a well-established segment.
- You're raising money: Barcelona raised slightly less than Madrid in H1 2025 (690 million vs 806 million euros, Dealroom). Compare both ecosystems in our Madrid guide.
- You're watching costs: average office rent is slightly higher than in Madrid (19.6 vs 18.34 euros/sqm/month in 2025). Check the other cities in our Spanish startup cities comparison.
- You want visibility: plan around 4YFN, held during Mobile World Congress in early March.
