Spain inflation hits 4.9%: what it means for 2027 pensions
According to the flash estimate published by Spain's national statistics office, the INE, on 29 September 2026, annual inflation reached 4.9% this month, up 0.6 points from 4.3% in August and the highest reading since February 2023 (when it stood at 6%). The INE also puts core inflation, which strips out unprocessed food and energy, at 3.1%, a rise of 0.2 points. The financial daily The Objective, relaying the INE figures, points to the main driver: vehicle fuels and lubricants went up this September, whereas they had fallen in the same month of 2025. Keep in mind this is a preliminary figure: the INE will publish the final September data on 14 October.
Why is this trending today? Because of pensions. As Última Hora explained on 24 September, since the 2021 reform (Law 21/2021, article 58 of the Social Security framework law) the yearly uprating of contributory pensions no longer depends on a single month: it uses the average annual inflation rate over the twelve months from December 2025 to November 2026. Using August data, the think tank Funcas, cited by the same paper, was projecting an increase of about 3.2% for 2027, compared with the 2.7% applied in 2026. Última Hora adds a detail you won't find elsewhere: the maximum pension, set at €47,034.40 a year in 2026, could climb to around €48,593 in 2027, an estimated rise of 3.315% that includes a legal top-up of 0.115 points.
After today's jump, El Mundo, Diario AS and La Razón all raise the possibility of a pension increase above 3% next year. El Mundo goes furthest in its headline, suggesting the average retirement pension could top €1,625 a month; we were only able to check the headline, not the full article, so treat that number with caution. Some secondary news aggregators (noticiastrabajo.es and aragondigital.es) go further still, projecting that the minimum retirement pension for a single person aged 65 or over could move from €936.20 to about €1,018 a month (+8.8%), and the full non-contributory pension from €628.80 to about €716 (+13.9%), since these benefits get an extra legal uplift on top of inflation. No official source has confirmed those projections so far.
So, if you receive a Spanish pension, what should you take away? Nothing is settled yet. Estimates range from Funcas's 3.2% at the end of August to higher figures floated by some media this week, and, as Última Hora reminds readers, the final percentage will only be known once the October and November inflation data are in, with official approval expected at a Cabinet meeting around mid-December 2026.
