Red rain alert in Tarragona: what Spain's press reports
According to Moncloa.com, the alert for Tuesday 29 September 2026 is at red, the top level (6/6), for torrential rain on the northern coast and pre-coastal strip of the province of Tarragona. The Generalitat has activated INUNCAT, its flood emergency plan. The same outlet explains how things escalated: Meteocat had first raised its rain and storm warning to orange (danger 4/6) across Catalonia for Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September. Moncloa.com also cites AEMET, which now rates the risk as "extraordinary danger" for the coastal and pre-coastal Camp de Tarragona, with up to 180 litres per square metre possible over 12 hours.
Diari de Tarragona focuses on the texts that lit up phones. It reports that Protecció Civil sent an ES-Alert at around 10pm on 28 September, warning of locally intense rain between 8am and 2pm on Tuesday. The Tarragona paper names five comarques in its own province: Baix Camp, Alt Camp, Tarragonès, Baix Penedès and Conca de Barberà. Crónica Global widens the picture and lists other Catalan comarques that also got the alert: La Selva, Maresme, Vallès Oriental, Vallès Occidental, Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Garraf and Alt Penedès. The outlets don't give the same total number of areas, so it's worth checking the official channels for your own municipality.
On timing and intensity, Moncloa.com says the most dangerous window is between 6am and noon on Tuesday along the coast and pre-coastal zone. It adds a Meteocat forecast of more than 40 litres per square metre in just 30 minutes at some points during the heaviest bursts. Rainfall figures differ from one outlet to another, largely because each one quotes a different time window. Diari de Tarragona passes on Protecció Civil's advice: stay off secondary roads, keep away from rivers, streams and flood-prone ground, and take extreme care if you have to travel at all.
This explains why searches for "alerta de lluvias intensas" are climbing on Google Trends in Spain today: the ES-Alert texts reached millions of phones across Catalonia overnight. The storm also comes in a week of generally falling temperatures in Catalonia, according to a La Vanguardia headline dated 28 September. If you live in or are heading to the Tarragona area, keep an eye on Meteocat and Protecció Civil updates through Tuesday morning.
