Valencia's LGBTQIA+ scene: from El Carmen to Russafa, a nightlife reinventing itself

Clubs, drag, ballroom, the Gay Games and the Arbre del Gos beach: a verified map of Valencia's queer culture, address by address.
Valencia's LGBTQIA+ scene: from El Carmen to Russafa, a nightlife reinventing itself

Twenty years ago, Valencia's LGBTQIA+ nightlife beat in the heart of El Carmen, around calle Quart. Today it has reinvented itself in Russafa, shows off at the Gay Games and has even grown its own ballroom scene. Here is a map of a queer culture in fine form, with every address checked.

From El Carmen to Russafa, a migration

The old-timers will tell you about the Venial, the gay temple of calle Quart, now closed, and the drag cabarets that made the legend of Valencia's nightlife. El Carmen keeps a few strongholds, like the Trapezzio, a café-bar with a big terrace that is perfect for a pre-dinner drink, or the Café de las Horas with its unapologetic baroque. But the centre of gravity has shifted towards Russafa: around the market, the Pub Templo and its packed Sunday-night drag shows, La Boba y el Gato Rancio for the alternative queer spirit, the COMIC café by day, and a constellation of addresses ranging from neighbourhood bars to more specialised venues.

The dance floors

The community's big club is Deseo 54, in Marxalenes: two floors, in-house drag shows ("Esto es Drag"), everything from house to reggaeton, and a Super Fallas Circuit Festival that draws people from across Europe in March. The Piccadilly Downtown Club, gay-friendly and lively, has made three-channel silent discos its signature. The Oven Club, redesigned in 2025, pulls a mixed, discerning crowd on electro nights. And for a cocktail before you dance, La Bella de Cádiz, in Russafa, serves its mojitos in irresistibly kitsch-baroque surroundings.

Drag, cabaret, ballroom

Valencian drag is thriving: dinner-shows at Pekado in El Carmen or at the Barbarela, weekly shows at the Templo and Deseo 54, and a global ambassador in Choriza May, who rose to fame on Drag Race UK and opened the Gay Games. More underground but buzzing, the ballroom scene has taken root over the past few years: kiki balls and practices led by pioneers Inka Romaní and Julia Zac, notably at the Espai La Granja. Voguing in Valencia: yes, it exists, and it is open to the curious.

The big dates

The event of the year is of course the XII Gay Games, from 27 June to 4 July 2026: more than 10,000 participants, 39 disciplines (including pilota valenciana, naturally), venues all over the city and a festival village at the Marina. June's Orgull, organised by Lambda, remains the annual gathering for the whole community, with its more critical edition setting off from Russafa. On the culture side, keep an eye on Loving Diversity VLC, the city's intersectional queer listings, and on the roving parties that circulate mainly via Instagram. La Mostra La Ploma, the LGTB film festival run by Lambda in the mid-2010s, is dormant: its revival is still awaited.

And the beach

Valencia's historic LGBTQIA+ beach is the Arbre del Gos, between Pinedo and El Saler: 2.5 kilometres of sand backed by dunes, a naturist and gay zone mid-beach, a Blue Flag and the number 25 bus that drops you there in half an hour from the centre. The perfect place to end this guided tour, feet in the water.

Good news to finish: none of the addresses mentioned here is just a memory. We checked every one, one by one, in the summer of 2026. Valencia's queer nightlife has changed neighbourhood, not energy.
