Are Fallas firecrackers dangerous, and how do you stay safe?

· La Rédaction de TDV
Noise, injuries, and a surprising regional age exception: what parents and visitors should know to stay safe during Fallas.

Yes, Fallas fireworks carry real risks, mainly hearing damage from the noise and injury from handling firecrackers, but both are manageable with a few sensible precautions, which is what the rest of this guide covers.

Pyrotechnic articles in Spain are regulated under the Reglamento de Artículos Pirotécnicos y Cartuchería (RAPyC), approved by Royal Decree 989/2015. Nationally, minimum ages by category are:

CategoryWhat it coversNational minimum age
F1Sparklers, small smoke items, negligible noise, home use12
F2Medium firecrackers, fountains, small batteries, open spaces16
F3Larger pyrotechnic items18

Why are the rules different in the Valencian Community?

This is the detail that catches a lot of foreign parents off guard: in the Valencian Community, the minimum age is lowered, from 12 to 8 for category F1, and from 16 to 10 for category F2. The catch is that this requires written parental or guardian authorization, and the child can only use the fireworks in the presence of an adult (regulation relayed by the Godelleta town council, godelleta.es). In practice, this means you may see children younger than you'd expect handling firecrackers legally during Fallas, under adult supervision and with paperwork behind it, which is simply a different regulatory culture than most visitors are used to.

  • F1, national minimum age: 12. Valencian Community: 8, with written parental authorization and adult presence required.
  • F2, national minimum age: 16. Valencian Community: 10, same conditions.

If you're an expat or visiting parent, this is worth knowing before your kids are anywhere near a box of firecrackers at a friend's house or a street stall.

How loud is a mascletà, and can it damage your hearing?

During a mascletà, noise levels can exceed 150 decibels (TodoAlicante). For context, the World Health Organization sets the safe exposure threshold at 85 decibels, and for impulsive noise specifically, the kind firecrackers produce, its recommended limits are 140 dB for adults and 120 dB for children (WHO recommendations). Repeated or close-range exposure at mascletà volumes carries a real risk of temporary or permanent hearing loss, and tinnitus.

What actually happens, injury-wise, during Fallas?

During Fallas 2026, the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) logged 531 assistance interventions during the early events of its preventive deployment alone. That included 269 fainting episodes, 72 injuries, 49 anxiety episodes, 44 cases of trauma, and 21 hospital evacuations, with a further 44 interventions at the Nit de la Cremà (the final burning night). Cruz Roja was present at 42 fallas events, with around 80 people deployed per mascletà and 5 ambulances on standby (Valencia Plaza). It's worth being clear that this is the record of one specific edition of the festival, not a stated yearly average.

More serious, individual cases were also reported during Fallas 2026: a 12-year-old boy lost a finger while handling a firecracker and was taken to La Fe hospital, and six children suffered minor burns during the cremà (burning) of a children's falla in Alberic (El Caso; Telecinco). On the enforcement side, the festival also saw 13 arrests and around 60 proposed sanctions for improper use of pyrotechnic material (Noticias Ciudadanas).

How can you keep your family safe at Fallas?

None of this is a reason to skip the festival, but a few precautions go a long way:

  • Protect ears, especially for children. Use proper ear defenders for babies and small children, and earplugs for adults, anywhere near a mascletà or castillo.
  • Keep your distance during the mascletà. Don't push to the very front of the crowd, the closer you are, the higher the noise exposure and the risk from stray debris.
  • Supervise children closely anywhere firecrackers are in use, even where local rules permit younger kids to handle small items under adult authorization.
  • Never pick up an unexploded firecracker. Leave it where it is and move away.
  • For a minor burn: cool the area with water, don't pop any blisters, and see a doctor if you're at all unsure of the severity.
  • Know where the Red Cross posts are near the events you're attending, Cruz Roja is routinely deployed at fallas events throughout the festival.

FAQ: Fallas firecracker safety

Can my child legally use firecrackers in Valencia?

It depends on category and age. In the Valencian Community specifically, children as young as 8 can use category F1 items and age 10 for category F2, but only with written parental authorization and in the presence of an adult (godelleta.es). Nationally, without that regional exception, the minimums are 12 and 16.

How loud is too loud at a mascletà?

Mascletà noise can exceed 150 decibels, well above the WHO's general safe exposure threshold of 85 decibels and its impulsive-noise limits of 140 dB for adults and 120 dB for children (TodoAlicante; WHO).

Is it safe to bring a baby to a mascletà?

Given the noise levels involved and the WHO's lower recommended limit for children, proper ear protection for infants is essential if you choose to attend, and standing further back from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento reduces exposure.

What should I do if someone gets burned by a firecracker?

Cool the burn with water, don't pop any blisters, and see a doctor if you're unsure how serious it is. Red Cross posts are deployed at fallas events throughout the festival if you need on-site help.

Are injuries common during Fallas?

During Fallas 2026, Spain's Red Cross logged 531 interventions in the early events of its deployment alone, mostly fainting episodes, with smaller numbers of injuries, anxiety cases, trauma, and hospital evacuations (Valencia Plaza). More serious individual incidents, including a child losing a finger, were also reported that year (El Caso; Telecinco).

What happens if you misuse fireworks during Fallas?

During Fallas 2026, there were 13 arrests and around 60 proposed sanctions for improper use of pyrotechnic material (Noticias Ciudadanas).
