English-speaking gestor or lawyer in Valencia: who to hire and how to check them?

· La Rédaction de TDV
Gestor, asesor fiscal or lawyer: who does what, how to check a colegio registration in two minutes, and the English-speaking professionals we could verify.

For routine paperwork (NIE, registering as autónomo, a simple tax return) you need a gestor administrativo; for complex tax questions, an asesor fiscal; for a dispute, a tricky property purchase or an inheritance, a lawyer (abogado). Whoever you pick, check their registration with their colegio before you sign anything: the registers are public, free, and we show you how to use them. We also checked who actually offers a service in English: three professionals in Valencia meet all our criteria today.

Updated 3 October 2026. Checks carried out on 3 October 2026.

Gestor, asesor fiscal, lawyer: who does what in Spain?

The three jobs overlap, and many firms trade as a "gestoría-asesoría" that does a bit of everything. Here is the basic split.

  • Gestor administrativo: a regulated profession specific to Spain, with no real equivalent in the UK, Ireland or the US. A gestor handles routine administrative and tax paperwork, often acting on your behalf: NIE, registering or deregistering as self-employed (RETA), quarterly IVA returns, Seguridad Social, the town hall, or the DGT for a vehicle. Gestores belong to a Colegio de Gestores Administrativos. A gestor is neither a lawyer nor a chartered accountant.
  • Asesor fiscal (tax adviser): careful, this is not a protected title in Spain. It can be used by a gestor who specialises in tax, an economist, a business graduate or a tax lawyer. You go to one for the harder cases: income in several countries, assets abroad, capital gains, the special "Beckham law" regime, or an inspection by Hacienda. Since the title alone proves nothing, ask what their qualification is and which colegio, if any, they belong to.
  • Lawyer (abogado): registered with a colegio de abogados (the local bar), the only professional who can defend you in court and give legal advice that engages their professional liability. Essential for litigation (a rental dispute, a contested divorce, criminal matters) and strongly advisable for a property purchase or a cross-border inheritance.

When in your move will you need each of them?

StepWho usually handles itWorth knowing
NIEYou, or a gestorYou can do it yourself: see our step-by-step NIE guide.
Registering as autónomoGestor; asesor fiscal if choosing the tax regime is not straightforwardThe full process is in our guide to going autónomo in Spain.
Income tax return (IRPF)Gestor for a simple file; asesor fiscal if you have income in the UK, the US or elsewhereStart with declaring foreign income in Spain.
Buying a propertyLawyer for the legal checks; gestor or asesor for the tax side of the purchaseThe notary authenticates the final deed but does not act for you: that is your lawyer's job.
Dispute, court case, inheritanceLawyerBefore some courts, the lawyer works alongside a procurador, who handles formal representation in the proceedings.

On a property purchase, the lawyer typically checks the debts and charges attached to the property, any easements, its planning status, and reviews the deposit contract (contrato de arras) before you hand over any money.

How do you check that a professional is properly registered?

This is the number one reflex, whatever language the professional speaks. Start by asking for their colegiado number: anyone who is registered will give it to you without fuss. Then check it yourself in the public register. Both registers below are in Spanish only, so here is what to click.

Checking a gestor administrativo

  1. Go to the national register of the Consejo General de Colegios de Gestores Administrativos: registro.consejogestores.org. It is public and needs no account.
  2. Fill in the first name (Nombre) and first surname (Primer Apellido), or the firm name (Sociedad).
  3. In the "Colegio" list, pick "Valencia", then click "Buscar".
  4. If you get "No se han encontrado" (nothing found), try again without the colegio filter, as the gestor may be registered in another province. If in doubt, call the Colegio de Gestores Administrativos de Valencia (Calle Colón, 86, 46004 València, gestoresvalencia.org).

Checking a lawyer

  1. Open the search tool of the Valencia Bar (Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Valencia, ICAV): "¿Busca un Colegiado?" on icav.es. It is public and free.
  2. Fill in one or more fields: colegiado number (Nº Colegiado), first name (Nombre), surnames (Apellidos) or postcode (Cod. Postal), then click "BUSCAR". If a cookie banner covers the button, accept or close it first.
  3. The result shows the registration number, the professional address, whether the lawyer is currently practising ("Ejerciente": SÍ) and whether they hold professional liability insurance ("Seguro R. Civil").
  4. A lawyer registered with another Spanish bar (Alicante, Madrid...) can practise in Valencia: if they are not in the ICAV list, that is not necessarily a red flag. Look them up in the national roll of all Spanish bars, the Censo General de Letrados of the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española.

These tools work in an ordinary browser. If one does not respond, a phone call to the relevant colegio settles it.

Which English-speaking professionals have we verified in Valencia?

Our criteria: a professional identified by name, whose own website (or their firm's website) explicitly states that they work in English, with an office in Valencia, and whose registration we confirmed in a public register, at the same address. We do not list referral platforms (often paid by partner firms), forum recommendations, or firms where we cannot tell which professional actually works from the Valencia office.

Result on 3 October 2026: three professionals meet all of these criteria. They are listed in alphabetical order of surname. Being listed here is not a recommendation: we checked facts, not the quality of their work or their fees.

We did not identify an asesor fiscal who meets all the criteria on the same date. Several other names come up on directories and expat forums; we left them out because either their registration could not be confirmed in a public register, or the link between a named professional and a Valencia office remained unclear. The list will grow as we verify more names.

Where else can you find an English-speaking lawyer?

The UK government runs an official directory of lawyers in Spain, the FCDO "Find a professional service abroad" tool. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office states that its lists are "non-exhaustive" and "not recommendations", and that it "does not accept any liability" for the use of these providers. In other words: a starting point, not an endorsement. Whoever you pick, check their registration with the tools above.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use a gestor to get my NIE?

No. You can do it yourself. A gestor saves you time, especially if your Spanish is limited, but it is not compulsory.

Is an "asesor fiscal" necessarily qualified?

No, the title is not regulated in Spain. Ask what their qualification is and whether they belong to a colegio (gestores, economistas or abogados).

Do I need a lawyer to buy a home in Valencia?

It is not compulsory, but it is advisable: the notary authenticates the sale without defending your interests, whereas your lawyer checks the property and the contracts before you commit. If you are buying to rent out, also read our piece on rental yields in Valencia.

Can a lawyer registered in Alicante work in Valencia?

Yes. A lawyer registered with any Spanish colegio can practise anywhere in Spain. The Censo General de Letrados lets you find them whichever bar they belong to.

How can a professional be added to this list?

They need a professional website that explicitly states they work in English, a named professional based in Valencia, and a registration we can check with a colegio. Being listed is free and involves no payment of any kind.
