Today's essentials

Culla relives its 1233 conquest on 17 and 18 October. Culla, a village in the Alt Maestrat district of Castellón province, turns its streets into a 13th-century setting on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October 2026 for the eighth 'Culla 1233' historical re-enactment, according to Valencia Bonita.

The weekend opens at 10:00 on Saturday 17 October, when the medieval camp opens, followed by combat displays, archery and blacksmithing demonstrations. Two reconstructed camps, one Christian and one Saracen, stand side by side. Saturday's programme also includes family games, a talk on the Knights Templar and the Order of Montesa, a parade by the Germandat dels Cavallers de la Conquesta, a street show called 'The Market Thief' and a concert by the band Lochlainn Folk.

Sunday 18 October centres on the medieval market with artisans, alongside an exhibition of original historical documents from the Templar and Montesa orders. There is also a parade of banners, a Templar ceremony at the Calvari of Culla, a concert by Distillery Folk, a medieval photocall and guided tours. Local outlets such as La Plana al Día also list this year's event as the eighth edition.

The history behind it is real: in 1233 the Aragonese nobleman Blasco de Alagón, who also took Morella, captured the Muslim fortress of Culla with Templar support during the siege. The castle was then handed to the Knights Templar and, after that order was dissolved in 1307, passed to the Order of Montesa in 1317. The castle site and the Calvari are the two places worth seeing in their historical context while you are there.

Culla is an inland mountain village and is easiest to reach by car. For the latest details, contact the Culla tourist office at Calle Abadía 14 (phone 678 135 160, email turismoculla@dipcas.es). The sources consulted do not confirm whether entry is free for visitors. They do say that taking part as a market artisan is free, with exhibitor registration open until 15 October 2026.

What it means for you: if you fancy an autumn trip out of Valencia, plan to arrive on Saturday morning for the 10:00 camp opening, or go on Sunday for the market and the Calvari ceremony. Call the tourist office before you set off to check entry conditions and the timetable, and pair the visit with a walk up to the castle.

Weather today

Grey but mild across the province. Valencia city stays overcast on Wednesday 14 October 2026, with a low of 19 and a high of 26 degrees, a 13% chance of rain and winds up to 11 km/h, according to Open-Meteo.

Inland, Utiel starts cooler at 13 degrees and rises to 24 under cloudy skies, with no rain expected and winds up to 12 km/h, so a light layer is useful for the morning. On the southern coast, Oliva runs from 19 to 25 degrees, also overcast and dry, with winds up to 11 km/h. In short: t-shirt weather in the afternoon, and an umbrella is probably not needed.
