Today's essentials

The July Feria has 2 nights of fireworks in store this weekend, correfoc from 11pm. The Gran Feria de Valencia ends this weekend with a correfoc on Saturday 25 July at 11pm between Calle de la Paz and the Porta de la Mar, then the closing pyrotechnic show 'Rapsodia estival' on Sunday 26 July at 11pm on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, according to valencianews.es.

After nearly a month of fireworks, the Gran Feria de Valencia is pulling out all the stops for its final stretch. According to valencianews.es and elperiodic.com, the closing correfoc will bring together the Interpenyes de Paterna and Dimonis de Mislata groups, with a final firework display fired by Pirotecnia Zaragozana; the next day, the finale is signed by Pirotecnia del Mediterráneo. These are the last two of the five major pyrotechnic shows spread across the city since 4 July.

To make the most of it, aim for the right spots. Saturday's correfoc comes down Calle de la Paz to the Porta de la Mar: position yourself along that route, that's where the devils parade and where the final firework goes off, right by the centre. On Sunday evening, head for the Plaza del Ayuntamiento for 'Rapsodia estival', the festival's last show.

If you want to keep the party going, the Puente de Serranos has served as a stage for the pyrotechnic festival and remains a fine vantage point above the old Turia riverbed. And on Sunday during the day, the Feria wraps up for good with the traditional Batalla de Flores on the Paseo de la Alameda, a family event before the night of fireworks.

What this means for you: two evenings of free, open-air entertainment a stone's throw from the centre, with no ticket or booking needed. Arrive early, Calle de la Paz and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento fill up fast on fireworks nights, and remember to bring water given the heat forecast. Coming up on Saturday 25 July at 11pm (correfoc) then Sunday 26 July at 11pm ('Rapsodia estival'), according to valencianews.es.

Today's weather

Intense heat this Thursday, overcast skies over Valencia. A day of intense heat this Thursday 23 July in Valencia: 25 to 32 degrees in the city under overcast skies and no rain, according to Open-Meteo.

In the city, the mercury swings between 25 degrees in the early morning and 32 degrees in the afternoon, overcast skies all day and light wind up to 14 km/h: muggy but bearable. Keep a water bottle on you and avoid the full sun in the early afternoon.

Inland, it's tougher: up to 41 degrees around Cofrentes (minimum 21 degrees, 5% chance of rain, wind up to 23 km/h). On the southern coast, in Oliva, the sea tempers things a little with 26 to 35 degrees and a light 10 km/h wind. Outings are best enjoyed early in the morning or in the evening.

Transport and traffic

  • A tren-tram under study to link Aldaia to Valencia. A tren-tram project could replace the current C-3 line between Aldaia and Valencia, according to Valencia Extra, with the ambition of transforming mobility in the Horta Sud after the DANA. This connection is presented as a turning point for daily travel between Valencia and its southern belt: if it comes to fruition, it would change services for users currently dependent on the C-3 and would also weigh on the urban planning of an area hit hard by the floods. At this stage, it is a proposal, with no confirmed launch date: worth watching if you live or work around Aldaia.
  • Valencia-Zaragoza line: business groups step up. The Valencian (CEV) and Aragonese (CEOE Aragón) employers' organisations will file joint appeals against the government's decision on the rail line to Zaragoza, according to Las Provincias. Both employers' groups are calling for an electrified double track on this section of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean corridor. For businesses and travellers alike, the stakes are a faster, more reliable connection between Valencia and Zaragoza: an axis seen as strategic for freight and business travel, whose chosen level of development will determine journey times for years to come.

What changes for you

  • Brussels hits Google with a 890 million euro fine. The European Commission is fining Google 890 million euros for breaching the Digital Markets Act (DMA), according to A Punt. Brussels accuses Google of favouring its own services in search results and of making things harder for other developers who want to redirect consumers to alternative purchasing channels. For you, as a user in Spain and everywhere in the EU, these penalties are meant to open up more choice for you (comparison sites, third-party shops) against the search engine: nothing to do right away, but keep in mind that the results pushed to the top are not always the most advantageous.
  • Green light for the future Penya-roja health centre. Valencia's city council has approved putting out for public consultation the urban planning change that will allow the construction of the health centre the Penya-roja neighbourhood has been calling for over years, according to Valencia Extra. If you live in Penya-roja or nearby, it's a concrete step towards a local health centre. The file is entering the public consultation phase: this is when residents can review the project and submit their comments before the work goes ahead. Nothing has been built yet, but after years of calls, the procedure is finally moving forward.
