Sunset over the Albufera: our favourite summer ritual

· La Rédaction de TDV
Twenty minutes from Valencia: a boat gliding across the lagoon, a sky on fire and a paella facing the lake. The region's most beautiful summer ritual, and it is almost free.
Sunset over the Albufera: our favourite summer ritual

There are evenings in Valencia when the whole city seems to meet by the water. About twenty minutes south of the centre, the Albufera unfurls its huge lagoon fringed with rice paddies and pine woods. When the sun drops over the lake, one of the region's most beautiful free shows begins. This is our summer ritual: a boat, a blazing sky, and a paella facing the sunset.

Why the Albufera at sunset

The Albufera is Spain's largest freshwater lake, the heart of a protected natural park and the birthplace of paella valenciana. Beautiful by day, magical at dusk: the water turns to a mirror, the sky shifts from gold to pink, the traditional boats become silhouettes and the birds head home to roost. In early July the sun sets around 9.25 to 9.30 pm, plenty of time after a day at the beach or work.

The boat ride, the highlight

The must-do is the boat trip. You mostly set off from El Palmar, the village amid the paddies, but also from the jetties of Port del Saler, Catarroja or Silla, often quieter. A classic ride lasts about 45 minutes; dedicated sunset outings run 75 to 90 minutes to catch the best light. Budget-wise, nothing wild: from around €4 per person for groups of five or more, a little more in small groups. Book ahead for evening slots, they are the most popular, and aim to set off about an hour before official sunset.

And the paella, of course

You cannot talk about the Albufera without its paella. El Palmar is the cradle of the real paella valenciana, with chicken, rabbit and beans, cooked over a wood fire. The village tables also serve arròs a banda and arròs del senyoret, to enjoy facing the paddies. Many places offer « arròs per encàrrec »: order your rice the day before, and slot the meal just before or after the boat.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: about 20 minutes by car from the centre. Without a car, bus 25 links Valencia to El Palmar and El Saler.
  • When: arrive around 8 to 8.30 pm in early July, time to park, find the jetty and settle in.
  • Bring: some cash (not every boat takes cards) and mosquito repellent, loyal companions of summer evenings by the water.
  • The extra touch: push on to El Perellonet or linger at the lake viewpoint to stretch out the show once the boat is back.

Respect the place: the Albufera park is a fragile ecosystem, so enjoy it, photograph it, and leave nothing behind.

Whether you have just landed in Valencia or already have your habits here, treat yourself to this evening at least once this summer. It is simple, cheap, and exactly the kind of moment that quickly makes you feel truly at home.
